Important Facts about Breast Implant Revision Posted By : Wolf Krammel

For many women, cosmetic surgery procedures involving breast implants are a godsend; cosmetic surgery of the breast is one of the more common cosmetic surgery procedures performed by surgeons around the country and worldwide. Breast augmentation involves the insertion of breast implants to increase the size of a woman's breasts. However, it is possible that there can be complications and for this reason some who have had breast implant surgery may find it necessary at some point to undergo breast implant revision.

Breast implant revision may involve removing, adjusting or replacing the implants, and there may be many reasons the procedure is indicated. One of the most common reasons for breast implant revision is deflation or damage to the implant itself. This can occur with either saline-filled or silicone gel implants at any time and if there is a reason to suspect a problem, a woman is urged to seek immediate help. While a saline implant deflation is usually easy to detect, leakage from a silicone gel implant may not always be as evident. There may be no apparent history of trauma. Implants do have a limited lifespan and may need to be replaced at some point or points in a woman's life. However, implants can last up to 20 years or longer and do not need to be replaced unless there is a problem.

Another reason for breast implant revision may be that the individual is not happy with the size of her current implants. A woman might consider larger or smaller implants. Variations in breast size and contour may occur years after surgery due to weight changes, pregnancy, and the effects of time and gravity. This can affect the results of previous surgery. Breast implant sizing can be done with your surgeon prior to your procedure to help you arrive at an appropriate decision based on your desires, proportions, and chest anatomy.

A woman should be aware that cosmetic surgery of the breasts can have its issues. Certainly breast implant revision surgery can present certain challenges. For example, extensive scar tissue may be present requiring removal or alteration. It is, of course, essential that the potential patient is absolutely certain that they want to undergo breast implant revision, and that they understand all the aspects of the healing and recuperation time. A good surgeon will be able to operate with a minimum of risk. Breast implant revisions can be performed on an outpatient basis. Consult with your surgeon and make sure there is a clear mutual understanding of goals. If your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has plenty of experience with breast implant revision you should feel more confident that these goals will be achieved.

Breast augmentation may now be the single most popular cosmetic surgical procedure. Those who choose to have their breasts enhanced do so for a variety of reasons. Most commonly, women simply want to fill out clothing and bathing suits better and achieve a greater comfort with their body proportions. Surgeons are generally reluctant to undertake such operations unless they know the reasons behind the patient's request, and this is as true for breast implant revision as it is for breast augmentation.

In summary, breast implant revision has become an essential cosmetic surgery procedure for many women. As with any such operation, seek out your surgeon based on credentials and experience and make sure he or she is willing to spend time with you before you get to the operating room.
