Do You Really Need A Reason To Use A CPAP for Snoring Posted By : Dan Martin

CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, is a treatment for snoring that opens the airway, prevents sleep apnea, and stops the snoring itself.

The CPAP uses a pressurized mask over the nose to force air into the airway, thus keeping it open. This is the preferred medical treatment, but for patients who have to use it, it can be uncomfortable.

With CPAP, you don't have the machine breathe FOR you, but it can feel like that because it forces air into your airway when you inhale. It's still the best and most noninvasive remedy for snoring.

If you have a problem with snoring, visit an otolaryngologist to determine if obtaining a CPAP machine is right for you. If it is found to be so, you use the machine and wear the mask every night. However, you don't just put the mask on and then have your snoring problem solved.

Most often, people have comorbidities, such as smoking and obesity, which also cause snoring. To that end, taking care of these problems is also necessary in order to manage snoring problems.

CPAP is so popular now because, at least in part, the only option for snoring prior to CPAP was a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy happens when a doctor creates a temporary hole in the windpipe, which can be dramatic and invasive.

The CPAP is also popular because it is literally 100% effective, and it can be this effective with no surgery having to be done whatsoever. That said, though, CPAP doesn't permanently cure snoring; it only alleviates it while you wear the mask. It is possible that surgery could in fact permanently cure snoring, depending on the situation.

In other words, the mask is only a crutch that prevents your airway from closing up, but if you stop using it, you'll suffer the same problems with snoring once again. CPAP can also be difficult to use when you travel, and it may not be for you if you if you have claustrophobia.
